Reiki Session FAQ's

How does it work?

Energy is all around us. Reiki is a special kind of life energy, "Ki," that has its own wisdom and healing qualities. Using her hands, the Reiki practitioner guides this energy to the recipient. When the recipient has given consent to receive Reiki energy, this wise energy goes where it is needed to improve the mind and body. The intention of the practitioner, who is attuned to the Reiki energy, is to simply be a clear channel.

What do I do during a session? How does it start and end?

During a session, you may simply relax by sitting comfortably or lying down. If you would like to listen to music, please do. Any music you find relaxing works fine.

To begin a Reiki session, I will either text or call you 5 minutes before the appointment time. When the session is over, I will call or text you again and ask how you are feeling.

How long does the session last? How many sessions do I need?

A typical Reiki session lasts from 30 minutes to an hour. For children and adults with dementia receiving in-person Reiki, the practitioner may start with 15 minutes.

You may decide how many sessions you need and how frequently. A common practice is to start with one or 2 sessions a week until the issue has improved, then have a monthly "tune-up" session.

My child can't sit still for 30 minutes, but I think Reiki can help.

If a person, such as an active child or someone with dementia who paces, can not sit or lie down for 15 minutes to an hour, the practitioner will simply stay in the same room and send the Reiki from a distance. Distance Reiki, where the practitioner is in another location, can also be provided to your child. Activity does not affect the Reiki. Consider a distance Reiki session for bedtime or a mealtime.

How long do the effects last?

How long the effects last and how intense they are depend on each person. Everyone has a unique response. In my experience with patients in hospice care, many reported that the symptoms were gone or less for 24 hours. Several patients with pain reported having enough relief for up to 3 days that they did not feel the need to take extra pain medications for pain not controlled by their regular dose of medication.

I am a Christian, and I am not sure about it.

Reiki is not a religion. It is a spiritual practice much like prayer, communion, meditative reading of the Bible, and other methods for connecting to God as the "greatest and highest Good." A hospice patient once called the energy, "God's love."

I say, "Reiki is a prayer that I do with my intention and my hands."

I am undergoing treatment for a medical/mental health illness. Is Reiki okay to have?

Yes. Reiki is safe to have as a complementary or integrative treatment to medical care. Reiki should not be used as an alternative to medical/mental health care you are receiving. Reiki is not a cure for any ailments or condition you are experiencing. Please consult with your doctor if you have any concerns.

If you would like to experience a Reiki session, it is my honor to provide you with a 30-minute complementary session. Please go to the contact page and send me an email. You do not need to leave the comfort of your home to receive Reiki.
